Steps:

1. Site setup and ladder placement

Position extension ladder at the designated access point. Verify ladder angle: base 1 foot out for every 4 feet of height (75°, 4:1 ratio). Ladder must extend a minimum of 3 feet above the roof edge. Secure top and bottom of ladder before first climb.

→ If ladder angle is not 75° (4:1 ratio): reposition before anyone climbs — do not adjust from the top.

2. Anchor point inspection and harness donning

Inspect the anchor point before tying off: confirm structural attachment is to a ridge board or structural member rated for fall loads (minimum 5,000 lbs per worker). Don safety harness — all straps snug, chest strap at mid-chest, D-ring centered on upper back. Connect lanyard and verify gate locks before moving above 6 ft.

3. Tear-off

Remove existing shingles, starting at the ridge and working down. Strip all layers down to the deck. Inspect deck boards as tear-off proceeds — probe for soft spots, rot, and delamination. Photograph any deck damage before continuing.

→ If deck boards show rot, soft spots, or damage during tear-off: stop, photograph, call owner — do not continue until scope change is approved.

4. Ice-and-water shield installation

Install self-adhered ice-and-water shield at all eaves (minimum 24 inches inside the warm wall line), valleys, penetrations, and low-slope areas per local code. Ensure deck is clean, dry, and above 40°F for proper adhesion.

→ If ambient temperature is below 40°F: do not install self-adhered ice-and-water barrier — adhesion fails below 40°F; reschedule.

5. Felt / synthetic underlayment

Install underlayment horizontally, starting at the eave and overlapping each course per manufacturer spec (typically 2 in on horizontal laps, 4–6 in on end laps). Fasten per manufacturer requirements. Monitor weather during installation — underlayment is not a permanent moisture barrier.

→ If weather forecast shows rain within 4 hours and underlayment is not complete: tarp the exposed deck — do not leave bare OSB exposed overnight.

6. Drip edge and flashing installation

Install drip edge at eaves (under underlayment) and rakes (over underlayment). Install step flashing at all vertical wall intersections — each piece of step flashing must integrate with the siding. Install valley flashing.

→ If existing step flashing is corroded or improperly integrated with siding: replace step flashing — do not overlay corroded metal.

7. Starter strip and first course

Install starter strip along the eave with adhesive strip facing up. Starter strip must overhang the drip edge ¼–¾ inch. Stagger joints. Snap a chalk line for the first full course — confirm alignment is straight before nailing the first row of shingles.

→ If starter strip overhang is not ¼–¾ inch past drip edge: pull and reset — improper overhang is the #1 cause of wind-uplift failure on the first course.

8. Field shingle installation

Install shingles in a staggered pattern per manufacturer spec. Nail in the nail zone (per shingle label — typically 1 inch above the cutouts). Use the correct nail length for the installation: nail must penetrate the deck a minimum of ¾ inch or pass through the deck. Nail count per shingle per manufacturer requirement (typically 4 nails standard, 6 nails for high-wind).

→ If nail placement is in the "high nail" zone (above the nail line): flag the course — high nails reduce wind resistance and may void manufacturer warranty.

9. Ridge cap installation

If ridge vent is specified: install ridge vent before ridge cap per manufacturer instructions. Cut slot in ridge per vent width specification. Install ridge cap over vent, nailing into the solid deck on either side of the vent slot.

→ If ridge vent was not installed before ridge cap: stop — cap over a sealed ridge creates attic moisture problems; confirm with owner.

10. Final inspection and cleanup

Walk entire roof: check shingle alignment, nail exposure, flashing integration, ridge cap seating, and any open penetrations. Remove all debris from roof and gutters. Conduct magnetic nail sweep of entire perimeter — lawn, driveway, landscaping.

→ If magnetic nail sweep returns ferrous debris: re-sweep entire perimeter — a single nail in a lawn or driveway is a liability event.
